With the tremendous effort of many people, SATAI was able to conduct two major crash tests at the September Conference. The first crash was a car-2-car offset collision involving a older sedan and a newer smaller sedan. The offset collision occurred with each car traveling at about 37 mph. We were all impressed how crash safety has improved over the years as new sedan fared much better in terms of survivable space in the crush zones.
The second crash test was a rollover of a 15-person van. The vehicle was loaded with 14 ballast dummies filled to 175 lbs each. After reaching a speed of approximately 60 mph, a two-step steer was used to initiate the roll. The result was 1.5 rolls as the vehicle rolled on both asphalt and dirt.
Following the crash test, Nicolas Carpenter, Ph.D. gave a wonderful talk on planar mechanics. After the Friday session, many of the conference attendees retreated to the Residence Inn for a evening of food, drink and good company.
On Saturday morning, Kelly Bosch and Rob Larson gave an great talk on UTV reconstruction. The afternoon session consisted of Bob Anderson discussing the initial crash test results and Joe Manning giving short presentation on the state of SATAI.
Thanks to everyone for attending and supporting SATAI. With the involvement of all its members, we will continue to provide knowledge and information to enhance our understanding of the field of accident reconstruction.
